    June 19th, 2002

It is late (10:20). The patter of rain is working it's magic on the tent walls, and soon I will drift off into dreamland, but first a summary of our day on the river.

We left our palace on the rock at 8:30 am and headed down the river to dipper rapids. We stopped on the left shore at an old pullover that had been abandoned and reconstructed about 150 metres downstream. There is a deluxe lunch shelter at the top, and an excellent railway for skiffs. Unfortunately, we realized the parallel portage after picking our way across the old portage with heavy packs. On our second trip with the canoes, we walked comfortably along the boardwalk.

After leaving Dipper Rapids, we found that due to the low water there was another mior chute to run. In higher water, this likely wouln't exist.

We stopped a Happy Valley Outfitters for a look around, and had lunch at the outlet of Dipper Lake. It was sunny with a bit of an easterly breeze as we headed across dipper Lake and into Primeau Lake.

There is a significant difference in terrain here as we begin to find more rock outcrops and dramtic hills. The water is very shallow in this area with plenty of exposed rock and sand bars. We an otter on the way in the river toward crooked rapids.

Arriving at crooked rapids we found the water level quite los and after reading Sid Robinson's description of the second and third rapids, we chose to do the 1100 metre portage. It has been virtually abandoned with no sign of traffic. It was very tricky to find and was quite a challenge stepping over deadfall and trying to make out the trail wearing canoes on our heads.

After we arrived with the canoes on our second carry, it began to rain and we quickly set up camp.

I set up a guides tarp for a kitchen and sitting area, and we had an excellent soup gumbo for supper.

We are tired and hope tomorrow brings a little sunshine. Our distance today was approximately 43 k on water and 5 difficult kilometers by land.
