June 24th, 2002 Trout Portage This trip has been remarkable, quite unlike any other. The weather has been completely in our favour. This morning once again we set out on a glassy surface amid the sound of loons echoing across the water. Black Bear Island Lake is without a doubt one of the most beautiful locations on this planet. As we reached our first narrows, the morning fishing boats from Shadd Lake Camp appeared on their way to another walleye extravaganza. As we neared Birch Point more boats appeared this time from Sportsman's Lodge on Macintosh Lake. All the way to the rapids the reality of the intense personal journey each of
these trips has been was very clear to me. It is a time of deep reflection and
reaffirmation of the need to connect with a land unscathed by human plunder. There is very little more one could ask of this camp site. We gorged ourselves on fish caught at Birch Rapids, swam and fished some more. It is unfortunate that we are so quickly arriving at our destination. To continue on to Pelican Narrows, Sandy Bay, or Cumberland House would be excellent. Tomorrow will bring more of the same I'm sure. We will likely camp around Murray Falls tomorrow.
