June 25th, 2002 Murray Falls, Devil Lake

We left our camp at Trout Falls this morning under another sunny sky. It is difficult to believe how good the weather has been for us. We paid little or no attention to the trip guide and descriptions on this section of the river. It was simply a rapid hopping adventure. Due to the low water any description of rapids would likely not be quite accurated. We ran everything that didn't appear to be a boat eater and thoroughly enjoyed each new turn and each new swift water section. An otter visited with us at the bottom of one of the rapids, and a golden eagle watched us float by further down the river. The run down from Trout Lake is an exellent adventure. If the trails on the six portages route were clean and the water high, the route from Nemieben Lake would be an interesting short tour.

When we arrived at Nipew Lake our lunch stop was taken on a rocky point that has obfioiusly been used for camping and tea stops by travellers for generations.

The wind at our backs on Dead lake blew with such force that we must have made a new world time record for paddling across the lake. In less than thre quarters of an hour we haspassed the second sandy beach and entered the channel around the last island into Hayman lake. After a brief rest stop near the end of Hayman Lake we paddled the last few kilometres to Great Devil portage. This portage is long. If strung together with Little Devil Portage without sufficient recovery time, the results are exhausting. Chris and Bella did the little Devil Portage while Glen and I decided to scrape the remaining gel coat from the bottom of my canoe. We lined and paddled down Little Devil Rapids, a refreshing alternative to the drudgery of another long portage.

As we paddled out to the channel, Glen spotted a black bear and we watched quietly for at least ten minutes.

We set up camp above Murray Falls, caught fish, ate soup, recounted stories and retired for the day knowing that tomorrow morning would take us quickly off the river.
