Day One: Put-in at Waterbury Lake 6/20/2004 |
We left La Ronge at 8:00 a.m. after some last minute phone calls to confirm
that the ice had cleared at our put-in point. We had heard that people were
still driving snow machines on Wollaston Lake. Road conditions were very good
on the way up to Points North with a bit of rain to absorb the dust. On our
arrival we all piled into one truck and with a driver to return the truck to
Points North after our put-in. The access point was long, wet and rocky. There
is a portage into a bay on the right side of the trail that would allow for
avoiding the full trip by truck to the end of the trail.
The waving in the departure picture isn't a goodbye wave, it's a blackfly wave.
As we set out across the lake to look for a suitable camping spot we found chunks
of floating ice and noticed that the east side of the lake was still iced over.
As soon as we set up the skies let loose with a deluge. Our first evening was
a damp and chilly beginning.
