Day Eleven: To Perch Rapids 7/29/2004
We arrived about 3 kilometers above Perch Rapids early in the afternoon,
made camp in a sandy bay, and headed off to fish for walleye. We set up
a substantial wind-break and enjoyed the evening talking, listening to
Glenn's short wave radio and gorging ourselves with any goodies that remained
in our food supplies. The next day a twin otter would arrive to carry
us back to Points North. Joan still had a potato, some bacon, fresh garlic,
and onions. (We are unsure where all of this magical food was stored in
Glenn and Joan's gear, but it kept coming out througout the trip.) Although
Scott's surprise rum bottle was gone there was still the hot chocolate
treat, apricots and home made beef jerky. Life on the river just doesn't
get better.
A porcupine waddled down the
well-travelled game trail while some of us were on the other side of the
river exploring. I was surprised to find porcupine in the area, but there
must be some reason for the name of the next set of rapids down the way
(Porcupine Rapids).
